Maths
All children will be equipped with the fundamentals of maths, enabling them to be confident, responsible and self-sufficient individuals.
At Great Wakering Primary Academy we aim to encourage each child to achieve their full potential in mathematics so they are fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, can reason mathematically and solve mathematical problems. We use concrete-pictorial-abstract and scaffolding approaches which reinforce mathematical concepts and improve fluency, followed by reasoning, thinking skills and sophisticated problem solving to enable children to become confident, critically aware and independent learners. Our maths curriculum is designed to enable children to apply their mathematical knowledge to the rest of the curriculum and real-life situations, such as financial literacy.
Maths is taught in accordance with the Maths Mastery curriculum resource
Daily maths planning must ensure that all children are given opportunities for:
1. Do now
Everyone is engaged in the task, 100% of the time
Everyone experiences success with no taught input
The practice they are doing will a) help them later in the lesson OR b) build fluency in a key skill
2. New Learning
Everyone says the most important star words
The teacher (and children ideally) model using concrete manipulatives
Everyone uses words and symbols accurately
Everyone is ready to answer questions
Everyone answers in full sentences
Misconceptions are anticipated and incorporated
The Talk task/Let’s Explore task is modelled
3. Talk Task
Everyone is speaking in full sentences
Everyone uses words and symbols accurately
Everyone is manipulating objects when appropriate
4. Develop learning
References are made to previously learnt models/ representations/ skills/ concepts
Everyone is ready to answer questions
Everyone answers in full sentences
Everyone uses words and symbols accurately
Misconceptions are anticipated and incorporated
The Independent Learning task is modelled
5. Independent Task
Everyone is engaged in completing the task, 100% of the time
Everyone has access to appropriate concrete manipulatives
Everyone is engaged in learning about the same mathematical concept or skill, with an appropriate amount of scaffolding
Emphasis on understanding and developing fluency, not rushing to ‘cover’ ideas
Extension tasks involve deeper understanding of the same mathematical concept or skill – through solving less routine problems, demonstrating using concrete manipulatives/ drawing diagrams, explaining in full sentences or asking their own questions
6. Plenary
Includes celebration of success and reaffirmation that success comes from effort
Each class teacher is responsible for planning maths for their class and it is adapted to meet the class needs; providing challenge for all children.
Maths is taught daily in KS2, four lessons a week are delivered in Year 2 and three lessons a week in Year 1. All classes also have daily maths meets where retrieval techniques are used to embed knowledge into long-term memory. Children receive a daily maths session in EYFS and mathematical based activities.
Teachers plan opportunities for maths application across the curriculum.
Recorded maths work is marked on a daily basis and feedback given that the children can respond to.
